November, 2004 -- CSB mail policy!

Beginning November, 2004, a new CSB email policy will go into effect.

• New CSB users will be urged to use the Yale email system, rather than the CSB system. (See (Migrating to) Your Yale email account below for details.)
• As of July, 2005, continued reliance on the CSB email system is at your own risk. For your CSB email account, we will provide:
  • no support
  • no guarantee of uptime or advance notice of downtime
  • no help and little sympathy for claims of lost mail
  • no assurance of continued access via webmail
  • no assurance of outside access to any mail services
• The CSB mail server will be available for internal use, and should be set to forward users' incoming mail to their Yale account.
• CSB users who use an outside provider, rather than the Yale or CSB SMTP servers for outgoing mail, will use a new procedure.

Email services formerly provided by the CSB are described but not supported.

(Migrating to) Your Yale email account

• Most CSB members will have accounts with Yale's Central Email Service (full documentation at hhtp://www.yale.edu/email/central/). That is the preferred (and cheaper) alternative. Some may have medical school accounts. (Documentation at http://its.med.yale.edu/email/).
• Getting your Yale account..
  1. You need a Yale netid. You probably already have one. Find out.
  2. You may already have a Yale email account. Find out.
  3. See Karen Parent in the MB&B business office (or the appropriate person in your non-MB&B business office) to get a Yale Central email account.
• Your email address. Your email address will have the form something like netid@pantheon.yale.edu. But, you should use an alias of the form firstname.lastname@yale.edu. This is described in more detail at http://www.yale.edu/email/directory/aliases.html.

  If your firstname.lastname@yale.edu already points to a CSB email account, you should have it changed. You can do that by logging onto Yale's START system at http://www.yale.edu/start. or by sending an email request to email@yale.edu.

• After your firstname.lastname@yale.edu is pointing to your Yale email account, you should make sure that any internal CSB email is forwarded to that account. Send a request to sysadm@mail.csb.yale.edu, giving your CSB username, and the address (usually firstname.lastname@yale.edu) to which CSB email should be forwarded.
• You can access your Yale email from any (modern) web browser at https://www.mail.yale.edu. If you want to use an email client like Thunderbird (recommended), Netscape, Outlook Express, Outlook or Eudora, the settings are:

  Login name:	netid (that is: your netid, not the word netid)
  IMAP server:	netid.mail.yale.edu (again, your netid)
  SMTP server:	mail.yale.edu

• To manage your Yale email account (enable/disable spam and virus protection, set up filters, etc.), go to https://config.mail.yale.edu.
• If you want to move your priceless collection of old email from the CSB server to the Yale server, you must use an IMAP-enabled email client -- you cannot use the web interface.
  • Make your Yale account the primary account in your email client, but keep your CSB account as an alternate.
  • Create folders on your Yale account, corresponding to the folders you want to move from CSB.
  • Drag and drop your email from the CSB folders to the folders in your Yale account.
  • To avoid confusion, you may want to delete the folders on the CSB server, >i>after you have verified that the transfer was successful.
  • If you have difficulties, consult with one of the CSB staff.

Finding your Yale netid, email address, and alias.

Go to http://scripts.its.yale.edu/cgi-bin/ph. Enter

firstname lastname return all

Where firstname lastname is your name, and "return all" is entered literally.

This should return your netid, the email address mail will actually be sent to (at the top next to your name), and your email alias.
