Network Access to Core Computing from Outside

Effective 17 July 2014, the following network services are available from outside the Core.

Secure login ssh -Y username@quail.rc.yale.edu (SSH Primer), (Problems?)
Secure FTP sftp username@quail.rc.yale.edu
Mail The Core no longer provides any email services. Use your Yale email account.
FastX X-Window emulator for Windows. Downloadable from the Yale Software Library. Connect via quail.rc.yale.edu.

Make sure you are using ssh version 2.x (The latest Windows client supports this).

If possible, try to avoid running resource-intensive programs on quail -- it has limited memory and CPU power. But you can use it to submit and check the status of batch jobs, or to run GUI applications (via ssh -Y or FastX).

You can download ssh2 for your Windows PC from Yale's software distribution site. You can only access this site from a Yale computer. If that link does not work, or for other platforms, go to Yale's software library frontdoor, and look for SSH.

Alternatively, you can use PuTTY for Windows.

If you have problems using sftp to upload your files from a PC to the CSB Core, check the version of ssh on your PC. Versions 2.2 (and earlier) have problems with setting file ownership. You should upgrade to version 2.3. See also here.
